Within our area of specialization, most jobs require a master’s degree in public health (MPH). There are not a lot of careers available to those with only an undergraduate degree. Given the broad array of focus areas within the field, requirements vary by position but generally trend towards requiring or at least preferring the MPH.

Education beyond that is typically only requested for higher-level positions and not expected or necessarily getting you much more in salary. A terminal DrPH/PhD may open doors otherwise closed to you – but if you go forward just trying to increase your earning potential based on positions obtained through education alone, don’t plan on practicing public health (or any kind of job really) as it will probably lack meaning for you.

An MPH gives these people advanced expertise and skills in leadership in health care and public health, particularly in influencing policy and program development.

Patient navigators work with healthcare teams to teach patients about treatment plans and how the healthcare system works. They are key in helping patients understand what they can do, and where they need to go for services.

Public Health Educator

Public health educators (or health education specialists) design programs to improve the general health of the public and to increase awareness of risky health-related behaviors. They work with antipoverty, healthcare, social service, government groups; medical organizations; community and healthcare provider networks to develop and implement policies that will immediately improve the well-being of individuals or entire populations.

Public Health Consultant.

Public health consultants assist healthcare providers and businesses in providing services to communities. Consultants conduct research, analyze health trends and provide strategy guidance on how to improve healthcare delivery and public health.

Health Promotion Specialist

Health promotion specialists develop programs targeting community health by focusing on substance abuse prevention, fitness, nutrition, and health care equity.

Clinical Research Coordinator

They manage clinical trials, recruit and screen participants, and collect data as well as monitor the results of each trial.

 

Biostatistician

Biostatisticians analyze health data, including the collection of data, analysis of findings and evaluation of risks and trends to support predictive public health policies and interventions.

Epidemiologist

Epidemiologists study disease patterns and risk factors to prevent outbreaks and improve population health.

Public Health Officer

Public health officers enforce health regulations and ensure public safety in various environments, from restaurants to workplaces.

Public Health Researcher

Public health researchers investigate health issues through data analysis and empirical research, contributing to evidence-based public health practices.
